Genetic improvement of microbial strains of industrial interest, metabolic engineering, control and validation of fermentation processes in use in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and environmental industry.
The team founded the “Bicocca Biotechnicum Center” a facility were pre-pilot bioprocess can be studied and developed.
Area of Research
- The research group is interested in the development of sustainable microbial-based bioprocesses, mainly valorizing residual biomasses as in the concept of biorefineries. This is pursued by tailoring microbial strains for the production of fine and bulk chemicals, biofuels, nutraceuticals, innovative materials and additives. Synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, screening protocols and adaptive laboratory evolution are the approaches used to leverage microbial potential, including robustness against stress, to match industrial requirements.
Expertise and Main Technologies
-
Industrial Microbiology, Fermentations and Bioreactors, Metabolic Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Quantitative Microbial Physiology, Biocatalysis.
Key Organisms
Yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and non-Saccharomyces yeasts)
Industrial Applications
The research matches industrial requirements for a change from linear to circular processes of production, as microorganisms and enzymes can valorize and up-cycle residual (bio)masses into novel products or products that can substitute those produced from fossil resourses and with high environmental impacts. We start from proof of concept and develop the potential process of production up to 10L scale bioreactor.
